Universal Design @ Living With Ease™
|
Many of the ideas for "Universal Design" in dwellings are based on common sense principles. If we want a dwelling to be used by people of all abilities we should consider the following outdoor recommendations:
-Accessible entryways with no obstructions, overhangs for weather protection.
-Lever door handles.
-Pathways should be 36" wide for safe wheelchair and walker use.
-Walkways should be level with little or no slope. Gradual slope should gain no more than 1" every 20" of walkway.
-Low maintenence plantings (trees, shrubs etc.).
-Raised beds for flowers and vegetables to minimize bending.
-South facing walkways (and ramps if needed) to encourage snow melt and dry surface.
-Maintenence free exterior trim and siding.
-Consider passive and active solar designs (i.e. most windows south facing, maximum insulation, hot water collectors, photovoltaic panels etc.).
By using Universal Design principles everyone can enjoy your home now and you will be prepared for whatever might happen in the future.
