Universal Design @ Living With Ease™
|
Many of the ideas for "Universal Design" in dwellings are based on common sense principles. If we want a dwelling to be used by people of all abilities we should consider the following kitchen recommendations:
-A lever style faucet is easier to control and can be used with one hand. It allows better control of the water temperature.
-A sink with a rear positioned drain will allow pipe placement toward wall and allow space underneath for sitting.
-Consider adjustable height sinks and stove tops with space under them for sitting.
-Stove top should have controls placed in front.
-Side-by-side refrigerators offers easier access. Large loop door handles are accommodating to users of all heights.
-Consider a raised platform for the dishwasher to make more accesible. Space underneath can be utilized for storage.
-Pull out counters offers extra space to work at different heights. It also adds counter space that can be easily hidden.
-U-shaped handles on cabinets and drawers allow for easier pulling than round knobs.
-Lazy Susans add storage space without taking up much room. They allow objects to be brought to the front with minimal effort.
-Consider a pantry closet with rollout shelves.
-Allow for extra space for manuevering a wheelchair or walker.
-Appliances that are easy to read and operate. If needed look for braille or voice activated controls.
-Have enough counter space to set down dishes next to appliances and cupboards.
-Adequate lighting including under cabinet strips (consider energy saving LED strips).
By using Universal Design principles everyone can enjoy your home now and you will be prepared for whatever might happen in the future.
