Universal Design In The Bathroom @ Living With Ease
|
Many of the ideas for "Universal Design" in dwellings are based on common sense principles. If we want a dwelling to be used by people of all abilities we should consider the following bathroom recommendations:
-use adequate door widths to accomodate wheelchairs or walkers (as throughout the house).
-Allow adequate room for manuevering in a wheelchair or walker (as throughout the house).
-Consider a tub/shower that has a water sealed gate entry and seat, so that all people can enter and exitwith ease.
-Make certian that there are securely installed grab-bars in tub/shower and near toilet. Tubs/showers typically require two bars positioned for support to aid both entering and exiting.
-Use slip-resistant surfaces (hopefully, the tub/shower unit includes a non slip surface).
-Use scald-guard tub and shower controls offset from the shower spray for easy access should the water need to be turned off in an emergency.
-Use an adjustable height showerhead with extendable hose.
-An elevated toilet or adjustable toilet seat should allow access for anyone who is physically challenged and has difficulty sitting down or rising.
-Consider an electronic, motion sensing, auto-flush mechanism.
-Use a toilet paper holder with an open-end design featuring a single post that's easy to change with one hand. Also, a spring-free toilet tissue holder makes changing the paper easier.
-Use a wall-mounted sink, which is convenient to use and operate, especially for people in wheelchairs. A height adjustable sink works for the most people.
-Lever faucets are easier to use. Consider one designed with a temperature control. Also consider electronic motion-sensing faucets.
-Countertop heights should be at a comfortable level that eliminates bending over. Height adjustable countertops work for the most people.
-A tilting mirror can improve visibility for people at varying heights.
-If the bathroom includes a laundry, choose a washer and dryer with front-loading doors, which make them easy to load and unload. Choose a model with tilted tubs that improve access and visibility.
-Good lighting helps everyone see better. Particularly people with poor vision.
By using Universal Design principles everyone can enjoy your home now and you will be prepared for whatever might happen in the future.
