Many of the ideas for "Universal Design" in dwellings are based on common sense principles. If we want a dwelling to be used by people of all abilities we should consider the following recommendations for appliances:
-Laundry appliances should be on main floor near bathroom and bedroom.
-Front loading washer and dryer allows easier access.
-Consider adjustable height sink and stove top with room underneath for sitting.
-Appliance controls should be easy to reach and operate.
-Good task lighting for all appliances (consider energy efficient LED strips).
-Braille or voice activated controls should be considered.
By using Universal Design principles everyone can enjoy your home now and you will be prepared for whatever might happen in the future.
